The North of New Zealand was hit with a magnitude-8 earthquake which prompted tsunami alerts. Tsunami waves are headed for Hawaii and American Samoa after the third major earthquake struck off Northern New Zealand, warned the Pacific Tsunami Warning centre.
It has been reported that the tsunami may have been generated by the New Zealander earthquake. The centre said on Thursday that there is a threat of sea-level variations and strong ocean currents which could be hazardous along beaches, harbors and coastlines.
The National Weather Service urged all residents along the coast to evacuate immediately to higher grounds. The American Samoa is about 1,700 miles northeast of New Zealand.
