It is a very popular and apparent exercise that people use “the” before the names of numerous countries and places when referring to them. We are grateful to grammar and common pronunciation that made way for all of us to say “the” before a nation’s or place’s name. Therefore it has become a day to day practice which turns out to be more of a habit that we say “The United States” or “The Maldives”, while inferring to them regardless of the fact that, only “The Gambia” and “The Bahamas” formally contain “the” in their nation’s names.
