The 2019 Dadasaheb Phalke Award, like the National Film Awards, was scheduled to be declared last year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Singers Asha Bhosle and Shankar Mahadevan, actors Mohanlal and Biswajeet, and filmmaker Subhash Ghai were among the members of the jury that chose Rajinikanth for the award.
Rajinikanth, 70, is one of India’s most well-known actors. He made his acting debut in the Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal in 1975, and went on to star in blockbusters like Billu, Muthu, Baashha, Sivaji, and Enthiran. Rajinikanth has also featured in a variety of Bollywood films, including Hum and Chaalbaaz. His most recent films include Kaala and 2.0 in 2018, Petta in 2019, and Darbar last year.
