The explosive red letter was written by 26 top Congress leaders including MPs in former Union Ministers demanding a full-time visible leadership and complaining about a shift in the party which spoke about uncertainty over the leadership. According to the sources, one of the key signatories of the letter said that “we are no more in a position to say that Rahul Gandhi will be able to lead the party and will help us get 400 seats in 2024 we must realise that in two Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019 the party hasn’t been able to get the required seats”.
Mister Gandhi had quit the 2019 election debacle and two months later his mother Sonia Gandhi returned as interim Chief. Since then, In recent months there have been growing calls for Rahul Gandhi to return as Congress chief. Earlier, furious Rahul Gandhi had interrupted Congress working committee CWC meeting and he had asked, why the letter attacked the Congress when it was at its weakest, when the party is battling crises in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and when the Congress President Sonia Gandhi is not well.
According to the sources, Rahul Gandhi also accused the letter writers of colluding with the BJP. The signatories from the letter include Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prithviraj Chavan, Rajya Sabha, Vivek Tankha, and Anand Sharma. The two leaders who have always been a Gandhi loyalist are Ghulam Nabi Azad and Rajya Sabha.
