Before reading this article, one thing is to be kept in mind that none of these sites are responsible for these scams. They have given a facility to the users wherein one champ report a particular advertisement due to any reason which one needs to specify and then the technical staff of the respective website looks into the issue.
A new type of scam involving scammers acting as buyers have led to people losing their hard earned money to these scammers. These people claim themselves to be an army or CRPF Personnel and send their fake ID card to gain the trust of the seller and agree with the price without even examining the item to be sold in person. They claim themselves to be posted out of station and can’t examine or see the item in person. They agree to pay an advance amount to the sellers account through a QR code or a link. First they claim to send a link for trial in which 10 rupees get transferred into seller’s bank account to strengthen the trust of the seller and then they send them another link or QR code which when executed leads to the transfer of the whole amount of money in seller’s account into the scammers account.
Another type of scam is when these scammers act as sellers. They quote such a price for a branded and expensive product which is too good to make any person lured towards it. Any innocent rather an educated person can easily fall a prey tot their trap as they claim themselves to be an army or CRPF personnel. They say that they will deliver the product to you via courier service and send you ample amounts of photo and video proofs and even a bill so as to make you believe in them. All these photos which they send have been acquired by them from as real advertisement published by a real seller on these websites. They just ask for an advance and rest amount after delivery in some cases or even all the amount beforehand. They again send a link or a QR code to pay into their account or even sometimes they send you their bank details. After paying the entitled amount into their account, they block you or send you a fake courier receipt and they say that the status will be reflected on the courier company’s site after a few days as they are facing some technical issues. After few days they don’t respond to your messages and their mobile number when contacted says “Switched off”.
In some cases they even sent a parcel containing old books or newspapers just to make it feel real and to get some time till the buyer comes to know about the scam and files a complaint. This is not a warning against using these websites but an advise to be careful while using them.
