So goes Assassin’s Creed’s retelling of history. Not many video game series can encompass such varied historical timelines and locations but Assassin’s Creed, that brands it so sui generis. Started as a spinoff title from “Prince of Persia”, Assassin’s Creed is an action-adventure stealth video game franchise published by Ubisoft, which depicts the centuries old struggle between assassins and the templars, both of them being two sides of the same coin seeking peace through conflicting means. Much of the game’s intentions was inspired by a novel titled “Alamut”, written by Slovenian author Vladimir Burtok published in the late 1930s.
What sets this game aside is that it takes the concepts of stealth combat and runs with it whilst throwing events of history like The Third Crusade, Italian Renaissance, The Golden age of piracy, French Revolution and encounters with significant historical figures like Leonardo Da Vinci, George Washington, Black Beard, Julius Caesar, King Leonidas and many more. Added to that, Assassin’s Creed is less religiously oriented despite its historical setting and focuses more on philosophy. The philosophy whether peace is better seeked by people’s right to exercise free will or through order and control of humanity.
Assassin’s Creed possesses some noteworthy combat and gameplay mechanics. From flawless mounting of Altair-Ibn-La-Ahad (the first protagonist of the series), and the close quarter combat with the hidden blade to the famous “leap of faith”, the franchise successfully achieved what no game could in thirty-five years. Moreover, as you synchronise with the viewpoints, you can feel the liveliness of Florence, Havana, London and more. As you explore its contrasting boroughs, you glean some sense of what powered the great cities in different centuries.
Assassin’s Creed has developed into a huge worldwide franchise with Ubisoft having over ten development teams and resources working on its upcoming releases. What keeps the gamers waiting is the historical plot points on which the next release is going to be based on. The series is a manifestation of creativity and imagination and so highly atmospheric such that you fall in love with it as you play on. Enjoy the game.
