Nine new judges including 3 women Judges appointed in Supreme Court on Thursday . With, Judge BV Nagarathn in line to be the first woman chief justice of India in September 2027. Supreme Court has only 10 vacant seats after the strength of 34 judges at present.
Besides Fathima Beevi, who became an apex court judge on October 6, 1989. Indeed, Seven more women judges appointed till now. They are justices Sujata Vasant Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Mishra, Ranjana Desai, R Bhanumathi, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee.
Justice Banerjee would demit office on September 23 next year.
Who is Justice BV Nagarathna?
Justice BV nagarathna was born on 30 October, 1962. She is the daughter of former CJI E S Venkataramiah.
She enrolled as an advocate on October 28,1987 at Bangalore and practised in the fields pertaining to the Constitution, commerce, insurance and service. Then, She was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka on February 18, 2008. Indeed, became a permanent Judge on February 17, 2010.
Nagarathna will have a tenure as an apex court judge till October 29, 2027 and may have a tenure of over one month as the first woman CJI after September 23, 2027.She is currently a judge in the Karnataka High Court. The other two judges are Hima Kohli, President of Telangana High Court, and Bela Trivedi, Judge of Gujarat High Court.
Other names proposed for the promotion are Abhay Oka, Chief Judge of Karnataka High Court, Vikram Nath, Chief Judge of Gujarat Court, JK Maheshwari, Chief Judge of Sikkim High Court, CT Ravikumar, Kerala High Court Judge and Judge of the Madras High Court MM Sundaresh.
