The Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, up 0.19 percent, was up 0.4 percent, while the smaller-cap Shenzhen Composite 399106, up 0.62 percent, was up 1%. Stocks in Malaysia FBMKLCI, 0.06 percent, and South Korea’s Kospi 180721, 0.76 percent, both gained 0.7 percent. Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, and Taiwan all had their markets closed for the holiday.
The S&P 500 index SPX, +1.18 percent closed above 4,000 for the first time on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.52% and the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.76 percent both gained. The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Friday, and bond trading will be limited to a half-day, ending at noon Eastern.
