In a keynote speech on Oct. 13, Apple unveiled its latest iPhone range, which includes the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, as well as a lighter iteration of the HomePod, the HomePod mini. The new iPhone series was dubbed “ushering in a new century for iPhone” by Apple. Is it, however, really “new”? Is it also worth the money?
These handsets aren’t Exactly Affordable
First and foremost, let’s consider the costs. The iPhone 12 Mini (64 GB) is priced at $699, while the iPhone 12 (64 GB) is priced at $799. The iPhone 12 Pro is priced similarly to previous iPhone Pro models. The iPhone 12 Pro (128 GB) starts at $999, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max (128 GB) costs $1099.
Faster 5G Speeds? Really!
The concept of a 5G network, which Apple strongly promoted during its keynote address, is the focus of the latest iPhone 12 line-up. 5G, on the other hand, is only in the early stages and isn’t yet accessible to all and anywhere.
While 5G promises faster updates and a more responsive user interface, as The New York Times and The Washington Post explain, that isn’t the only reason to purchase this new handset. Instead, update because you want to, not because of the latest features – unless, of course, you’re a techie who can tell the difference between the new iPhone and previous iPhones.
The screen on the new phone is an OLED (organic light-emitting diode). In other words, the screen’s colour contrast with your wallpaper can be improved, as well as the brightness settings.
Boxy Cubes Design
Other notable changes include the phone’s current form, which may or may not be significant to the average person. Gone are the curved edges of previous iPhones, and in their place are boxy cubes.
iPhone without a Charger!
The greatest and most frustrating news about Apple’s iPhone 12 is that it will not come with headphones or a battery adapter. The justification given by Apple is to save the world, with the presumption that everybody may already own one – which may or may not be real, but it seems to be a marketing ploy to encourage people to purchase the new MagSafe wireless charger.
So, do you think you can get the new iPhone? Maybe. But keep in mind that there’s always the next android, which will undoubtedly be released next year.
