On Thursday External Affairs Minister Jaishankar met with his counterpart Abdullah Shahid discussed several development projects in Maldives which includes a $500 million greater Male connectivity project (GMCP) which will be billed as the largest ever infrastructure project in the country. After the meeting with Abdullah Shahid External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also announced that the creation of an Air bubble with the Maldives to facilitate the movement of people from both countries India and Maldives for employment tourism medical emergencies.
Regarding the project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that “India’s special friendship with the Maldives is as deep as Indian ocean water”. According to the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, this project will be the largest civilian infrastructure project in the Maldives. The project includes the construction of a bridge and crossway link spanning 6 to 7 Km which is connecting Male with three neighboring Islands that is Villingili, Gulhifahu (where the part is being built under Indian LOC), and Thilafushi (which is a new industrial zone).
The government said, “After the completion of the project which will help in the boosting economic activities, generation employment, and promoting holistic urban development in the Male region”. After the meeting, Dr. S Jaishankar Tweeted by saying that “Warm in fruitful discussion with FM Abdullah Shahid of Maldives agreed that the pandemic has brought the two countries together”.
