What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘health’? Most people think that being healthy means being physically fit. This is correct but health is not just about physical fitness. Health is the state of being physically, emotionally and mentally fit. It also includes having good relations with family and friends and good cognitive skills.
Nowadays, home-cooked food has been replaced by junk food, playing outdoors by video games and shopping by online shopping. People do not prefer to do any physical activity on their own. Due to these lifestyle changes, they are physically unfit and suffer from a number of health issues. Physical health is the state of being physically fit in order to avoid diseases such as obesity, diabetes, etc. In order to maintain good physical health, people should follow a healthy diet including lots of fruits and vegetables. They should avoid junk food, drink a lot of water and exercise regularly. They should go for a regular health check-up and sleep for at least 8 hours a day to ensure that they are physically fit.
We often see parents teaching their children the importance of studies, hygiene and good physical health. They do not try to understand what is going on in their child’s mind or the amount of stress their child is going through. They do not realise that mental health is as important as physical health. According to recent research, every one in 10 Indians undergoes depression. This is due to poor mental and emotional well-being. The mental health of a person affects how he or she behaves and handles situations in real-life. In order to maintain good mental health, one should surround oneself with people he or she is comfortable around, meditate every day and exercise regularly. It is also important to seek help if one is undergoing stress or having difficulty in dealing with something to ensure their emotional well-being.
Apart from physical and social well-being, being healthy also includes maintaining good relationship with people, being friendly and having a positive attitude towards life. One should also spend some time alone to self-introspect and clear their mind. Another aspect of health is to have good cognitive skills such as learning new things and good communication skills. In order to maintain cognitive health, one should play games like sudoku, chess, etc., and participate in co-curricular activities.
Today people are so busy with their lives that they do not have time to take care of their health. But as the popular saying goes “Health is Wealth” i.e. if health is lost then no amount of wealth in the world can make a person happy. Only if we are healthy, we can enjoy every moment of our life and maintain a balance between work and family.
