The Rajkot Civil Hospital is courting yet another controversy after a video of its staff beating up a Covid patient surfaced on Thursday. The patient –– Prabhashankar Patil (38) –– died on Thursday evening.
38-year-old Covid-19 patient who was recently seen in a viral video being thrashed by the hospital staff in Rajkot Civil Hospital in Gujarat has succumbed to the virus. The patient Prabhakar Patil’s brother Vilas Patil has blamed the hospital administration for his death.
In words of Vilas Patil his brother died on September 12 at the hospital and before that he was brutally beaten up by the staff. Despite the patient’s death due to Covid-19, the hospital allegedly handed over his body to the brother. It was also alleged that the body was not cremated as per the protocol.
Sources report that Prabhakar was taken to a private hospital 12 days ago due to kidney problems. It was reported that there was water in his kidney. His operation drained out the water and later he began to suffer from breathlessness.
It was then that he was tested for Covid-19 and turned out to be positive. Following this, he was admitted in Rajkot Civil Hospital for Covid treatment on September 8.
Meanwhile, a video went viral on social media which showed the Covid patient being thrashed by nursing staff and security personnel inside the hospital.
Hospital authorities on Thursday (September 17) claimed the patient was “mentally disturbed” and was being restrained not thrashed, to avoid inflicting injuries to himself or others in the medical facility.
In the video, shot over a week ago, nursing staff in PPE kit can be seen struggling to overpower the patient lying on the floor. It was not known who shot the video.
While one person in PPE kit sits on the patient, another can be seen slapping and asking him to stay calm. A security man also uses force to control the patient.
The patient however is said to have worked as an operator at a factory in the city and claimed mentally fit. His family members have demanded the government to take action against the hospital alleging that Prabhakar died due to the negligence and inhuman behaviour by the hospital staff.
