Torrential rain and thunderstorms caused flooding on the Greek island of Evia.
Almost 7 people were killed by the floods due to the heavy rains and thunderstorm in the Greek island of Evia. 3 of the dead citizens including a 8 month old baby were from the village of Politika and another four were from the village of Bourtsi, rescuers are still searching for a missing person.
A Heavy downpour started at midnight on Saturday. Two rivers broke out of their banks due to the heavy rains and blocked several roads, obstructing the path of the fire trucks from reaching affected areas. The meteorological service of Greece said that some parts of Evia has seen rainfall that reached 11.8 inches due to this Storm Thalia.
Almost 3000 residences have been either partially or completely damaged due to the river burst. Fire fighters said,” We are experiencing a nightmare, we are using every possible means to combat the floods.” 97 people were safely evacuated from homes and cars, 30 people were evacuated by helicopter and 600 homes were drained of flood waters.
