Six days after it recorded four lakh infections, India’s COVID-19 tally raced past five lakh today with the highest single-day jump of 18,552 cases, according to Union health ministry data. 384 COVID-19 deaths were also reported during the period, taking the total number of casualties due to the virus to 15,685. The number of active cases stands at 1,97,387, while 2,95,880 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, according to the updated figure at 8 AM. On Friday, India crossed the 5 lakh figure after the country reported its highest single-day spike of over 18,000 cases.
It took 149 days to cross the five-lakh mark. India has been recording over 14,000 cases for the past eight days now. Maharashtra crossed the 1.5 lakh mark for total coronavirus cases with five thousand new COVID cases recorded on Friday—the highest single-day rise and the first instance of more than 5,000 cases registered in a day in the state. Delhi, which is grappling with a shortage of COVID-19 beds, reported 3,460 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. The national capital’s coronavirus total reached 77,240 on Friday.
