On Friday, August 28 Supreme Court said that the coronavirus crisis cannot be a valid reason for stopping elections. the Supreme Court has rejected a petition asking that Bihar Polls should be canceled or postpone due to coronavirus. By adding to this the court said the COVID-19 not be ground for stopping election interfering with the powers of the election commission.
The Court also called the petition “premature” because there was no notification announcing Bihar polls date. The judges also added that “the Supreme Court cannot tell the Chief Election Commissioner what to do. The Chief Election Commissioner will consider everything.”
According to the apex court ” There is no notification has been issued. How can we ask the Election Commission to not hold an election? COVID is not the valid reasons to postpone the elections. The petitioner’s name was Ankit Thakur who had asked for the Supreme Court intervention to put off the Bihar election by November due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis. “The election commission will take all the necessary precautions and consider everything” the code responded to the petitioner.
Regarding this petitioner has argued the supreme court and has claimed that the Bihar disaster management authority on coronavirus situation in the state is worse and ask to seek a report on this. The judges said “The election commission will take care of every situation. Petition dismissed.”
