Governor of Gujarat and Rajasthan, Justice Anshuman Singh, has died. On Monday morning, he passed away at the SGPGI Hospital in Lucknow. Apart from being the governor of two states, Justice Anshuman Singh, who is 85 years old, has also served as a judge in the Rajasthan High Court and as Acting Chief Justice. Corona struck him last month. Even after Covid’s test came back negative, his health did not improve, and he was hospitalised on a regular basis. At Rasulabad Ghat in Prayagraj, his last rites will be held with absolute state honours.
Justice Anshuman Singh was born in a small village in Prayagraj’s Shankargarh district in the year 1935. After earning a law degree, he began practising law in Prayagraj’s district court. He began appearing in the High Court within a few years. He was appointed a judge in the Allahabad High Court after nearly 28 years as an advocate. He was later moved to the High Court of Jaipur. For a few days, he even served as acting Chief Justice in Rajasthan.
Following his retirement from the judiciary as Governor of Gujarat and Rajasthan, he was appointed Governor of Gujarat and then Governor of Rajasthan. In both locations, his term was completed peacefully and without incident. After being suspended from the governorship of the Rajasthan High Court, he relocated to Prayagraj. When his son returned to India from the United States during the Corona period last year, he set a precedent by returning it from the airport. He assumed that if his son became infected while in America, he might infect a large number of people in India.
People affiliated with various political-social organisations and the judiciary have been deeply affected by Justice Anshuman Singh’s death. Today, all of the High Court’s lawyers gathered at his home to pay tribute to him, their eyes welling up with tears. Lawyers used to say that he really admired his junior lawyers and treated them as though they were gurus, imparting wisdom to them. His death, according to family and community members, is an irreversible loss.
