Announced in the year 2019, an online role-playing game based on the fantasy series, ‘Lord of the Rings’, has been cancelled by Amazon.com Inc’s video game division, said an Amazon spokeswomen.
The game has been developed by Amazon Game Studios alongside China-based Leyou Technologies Holdings, which was acquired by Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings in December.
A dispute due to the resulting contract negotiations between Amazon and Tencent, eventually caused the game’s cancellation. According to a statement emailed to Reuters, Amazon spokeswomen said that, “Following Leyou’s recent acquisition by Tencent, we have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time.” She further added that the Amazon team working on the game will be moved to other project.
Since its launch in 2014, Amazon Game Studios has struggled to release a successful game. While another of its previously announced games like Breakaway and Crucible were also cancelled, whereas New World has been delayed repeatedly.
Because of mismanagement and cultural clashes between the company’s principles and game developers, Amazon’s video game developers have struggled.
Andy Jassy, Amazon’s incoming CEO, earlier this year mentions that he was committed to the video games division, launched under outgoing chief executive and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
