On the occasion of 74th independence day While addressing the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his speech that the center has set with the 10 members of the committee who are reconsidering the minimum age of marriage for girls. Before 1978 the legal marriage age for the girl was 15 years which was changed in 1978 after by amending erstwhile Shradha Act of 1929.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on 15 August 2020, “we have set up a committee of 10 members to reconsider the minimum age for marriage of girls, soon after the committee will submit a report, the center with making decisions based on the reports”. As of now, the girls are allowed to get married legally when she is 18 years old. Even in the 21st century in some of the rural areas of India girls are forced to marry before 18 years which is illegal. Under politician Jaya Jaitley, the center had formed a 10 member task force in June this year and to recommend that among other things, whether the legal age of marriage for women could be changed from 18 years which is legally accepted now.
