To cater to a niche group of binge-watchers, Amazon has updated its Prime Video app for Android, allowing users to shuffle through episodes of a TV show.
Users would be able to start a series at any point and watch it in a random order rather than the normal linear one, according to Android Central.
Users can’t shuffle through the entire show; instead, they can only shuffle through one season at a time. Netflix, according to the article, is working on a similar feature.
“It’s an excellent option for reducing choice in sitcoms where character arcs and plot growth can sometimes happen asynchronously, or even in documentaries where such things don’t exist,” according to the study, which was released on Friday. However, the Amazon Prime feature seems to be limited at the moment, as it has only been seen on Android.
Netflix revealed earlier this year that it is working on a shuffle button. Greg Peters, Netflix’s COO and chief product officer, said that some customers come to the service “not knowing what they want to watch.”
During the company’s Q4 investor call, Peters said, “It’s really working for us that our members can essentially mean to us that they just want to skip browsing entirely, click one button, and we’ll select a title for them just to play instantly.”
