Azadpur Mandi is Asia’s largest wholesale market for fruits and vegetables. The number of coronavirus cases has increased in the Azadpur mandi area which has left the vendors as well as shoppers worried. As of now, 11 positive COVID 19 cases have been reported with one deceased.
Last week, a commission agent of 57 years had died from the virus. 10 more traders have checked Covid-19 positively since his death. Traders have been worrying since the commission agent’s death, Azadpur APMC former chairman Rajendra Sharma said. Several shops were shut down at the mandi after four positive cases emerged. They are even more worried after fresh cases have been identified from the mandi, and many of them are reluctant to appear in the market place.
The mandi administration claimed that precautionary measures were taken to ensure the safety and security of traders, labourers and farmers visiting the mandi daily. The shops of the traders who have tested positive and two shops on either side of them have been shut, as per the mandi authority. All the shoppers who come by as instructed to wear masks and gloves for precautions. People are requested to follow the rules of social distancing. The entry of shoppers is restricted. Tokens are being distributed, no vehicle can enter the mandi without a token. It is advised to wash the vegetables and fruits with soap and water before consuming it.
